Which is a very good question, my dear!

Conventionally grown cotton uses a lot of pesticides. I mean a lot. It's estimated that cotton pesticides are 25% of the world's uses of pesticides.

Why are pesticides bad outside of our food? Well, for one, it can leech into water.. cause cancer.. tons of nasty things you simply don't want to expose yourself to. And not to mention the harm it causes for the workers who have to work in those chemically sprayed cotton! :(

Organic cotton, much like organic produce is grown withOUT any pesticides, and it's all natural and just much better for the environment all around.

So when you can, get organic cotton stuff. I know it's 93583597 times more costly than regular cotton, but Earth will thank you for it.

Oh! And the Target sheets - while they feel nice, and they feel even nicer than they really are because it's organic cotton, I'm not head over heels about them. My regular old Egyptian cotton sheets felt better, but these feel a bit more serene to me too. I'm happy with the price though, and it seems the bamboo ones are really nice too so I'm wondering if I should get some... or should I just save my money?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thegreenlifestyle.blogspot.com/2007/06/why-organic-cotton-another-simple-way.html' title='Why Organic Cotton? Going in there is like going into Trader Joe's for the first time - you just don't know what you'll find! And it's so much fun. Everything is environmentally friendly, and I just love looking around. Whenever I'm in Encinitas, I try and make a stop there! There's also another store called My Organic House in Carlsbad that is supposedly similar (seems to focus more on home items rather than misc) and I want to try and go there soon too!

Here are some images from my last time at Environgentle :)

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rm81563sPII/AAAAAAAAAMU/Sz4AVBdX_FI/s400/DSCF1755.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075334574241496194" />

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rm812q3sPHI/AAAAAAAAAMM/dG1-EUU5k84/s400/DSCF1753.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075334518406921330" />

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rm81za3sPGI/AAAAAAAAAME/E5UndmsH6iA/s400/DSCF1752.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075334462572346466" />

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rm81sK3sPEI/AAAAAAAAAL0/iGCFlt5MQcM/s400/DSCF1750.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075334338018294850" />

Red Hot and Green

If you don't watch HGTV religiously (like I do) then you may not have seen their newest show (special feature? full show? The premiere episode showed a San Diego (yay!) couple trying to green their home and carpenter Carter Oosterhouse and eco designer Danny Seo headed the project! Lots of great ideas, I LOVED the kitchen and backyard - honestly, I WANT A BACKYARD!

In other news, our neighborhood did what I've been saying for the past few months - DITCH the two ugly huge waste bins and one tiny recycling bin for ONE big waste bin and ONE big recycling bin! There is SO much that I want to post and etc, but I always want to post PICTURES! And it never happens that way. SO I might as well just update.

The Car.
So no, I didn't end up getting a hybrid. :( Unfortunately, it wasn't in the cards due to money. I probably could have gotten a used one, but for some reason, I felt uneasy about it, and I liked the new Civics a lot. I ended up getting a regular Civic, but I'm hoping that one day when money isn't so tight that I can get a hybrid. :)

The Pets.
Poor Moochie, he recently got a urinary tract infection and the vet's thinking it could be cystitis. We were originally using World's Best Cat Litter for him (which is still a great brand) but I found that it created WAY too much dust for my taste. I would find yellow paw prints everywhere! So I ended up switching to Swheat Scoop which is basically the same thing, but with wheat instead of corn. It produces much less litter, and I think it hides the odor better too.

On top of that, I found a litter box deodorizer (plain baking soda didn't always cut it.. my cat's stinky!) called Mrs Meyers that is basically baking soda with essential oils. I found it at Target too :)

On Food.
So my boyfriend has been having dietary problems and after some poking around, we thought it could be dairy related, so we've eliminated dairy from his diet. So far so good, but it is SO HARD trying not to eat dairy because our culture puts cheese on EVERYTHING. Plus that's his favorite food. :( So we've been experimenting a lot with foods, and tried Namaste Waffle and Pancake Mix which was really good! We used egg substitute too, and rice milk, which the recipe calls for, and the waffles were yummy! I'll try and post more recipes and things we're trying out :) Also, during my research, I found this website, Go Dairy Free. Lots of interesting information on why we should consume less dairy as a whole. I think ANYTHING in moderation is better for you.

On Relaxing.
For a while now, I've been wanting to get a massage just to relieve any stress and loosen up, and my friend wanted to take a spa day so I agreed and went with! We chose to go to Ecotique because of it's claim to "natural ingredients" although under further inspection, their products still contained parabens and other things that aren't good for you, their salon is very nice. Great service, although a bit disorganized. I enjoyed my massage a lot - she told me I was tight in my hands and feet, although it was easier to relax my feet than my hands. Perhaps it's due to using my hands all the time?? :P

For the record, none of these images are mine. :P

I guess that's all for now... at least, all that I can think of! I'm going to try to update more, and not feel bad for not always having my own images to post. :P

Yoga for the Mind

(image from nowandzenlodi.com)

Something that I've been trying to get more into lately (and I even got my boyfriend to take a class with me, which he really enjoyed!) is yoga! Yoga is really relaxing, but REALLY hard at the same time - it's so much about strength, flexibility and balance.

There's actually a yoga studio in Pacific Beach that offers free yoga classes on Sundays here in San Diego. I found out about the class through one of my brides, who said that she takes 4 classes a week after someone commented on her toned legs. This studio also offers surfer's yoga, which my boyfriend was all over, and would like to try the class out. :)

I think everyone should try a yoga class at least once! One website that gives you awesome info about this is Terrapass.com. Simply go to the Road section, enter in what car you have, and annual mileage, and it will tell you how much lbs of carbon you're emitting into the air. It also tells you how to offset it by purchasing carbon credits.

You can also purchase credits for flights you take, and home usage. What's the point? Well they basically offset your carbon emissions by funding clean air sources. Neat, yea? :)

Awesome idea, and I found it VERY helpful regarding what cars to consider for having the lowest emissions. I looked at several cars, comparing mine to newer ones. Obviously, the hybrid would be the best bet, but after doing some number crunching, it isn't the most affordable bet for me either. I can actually afford a regular Civic, and something my boyfriend noted was that if finances get better next year, maybe we can trade it in for a hybrid.

*sigh* I test drove both the regular Civic and the Hybrid Civic today and oh goodness, I yearn for the hybrid WITH navigation. Why can't you be affordable?!

Here's a conversation I had with my boyfriend today in the car too which I found amusing.

HIM: Hybrid cars aren't affordable... you don't see poor people driving hybrids
ME: No, poor people take public transportation which is better.
HIM: .....
HIM: Well, you don't see lower middle class people driving hybrids.

:P

Time for a new car

I know it's been a while since I've posted.. things got busy for me doing weddings, and I wasn't able to upkeep this, since I really wanted to post at least one photo per post... and I want to have them be my photos as much as possible!

So, last week my car's transmission decided that it's time for it to die, and thus begins my search for a new car. I really want a hybrid - preferably the Honda Civic hybrid, but my brother, the sensible one, crashed all my hopes when he said "can you AFFORD IT?"

Honestly, with all that I wanted, (navigation and etc) I didn't know if I could afford a brand new one. And in the end, he said "If anything, just get a regular Civic" Umm... nah.

Maybe I'll just get a car that takes bio diesel.

Dishwashing - Ecover vs. Seventh Generation

So ever since we went green, we immediately changed all our cleaning products. I put pretty much all my products up on craigslist for free, and they got snatched up instantly. I figured this was a better alternative than throwing them out (and down the drain which is a NO NO!) and adding to landfills - plus the people who would use them would probably end up getting new bottles of the actual stuff, so I'm reducing demand, yes? There are other options of disposing your household cleaners through your city's toxic waste removal program. Isn't that scary? To get rid of household cleaners, we need to get rid of them through a TOXIC WASTE program?? That alone tells you that the products used in cleaners are not safe!!

So use safer cleaners.. Seventh Generation and Ecover are the two most popular out there.

Anyway, one thing that I needed was dishwashing soap - for handwashing and the dishwasher. Did you know dishwashers are actually better than handwashing a whole load if dishes? Of course, if your dishwasher is full, and is energy efficient.

So initially, I purchased Seventh Generation's automatic dishwasher soap, and found that it basically SUCKED. I ended up having to do more work before the washing than the actual dishwasher (this is coming from a person who used Cascade Complete beforehand and basked in the barely-rinsing before putting the dishes in). It turned out to be a hassle! So I looked online for more answers, and found Ecover's dishwasher tablets!

I read good reviews, so I bought a box, and just tried it on a load, and I must say, I'm impressed! I did rinse and got major food off beforehand though, and I got into the habit of rinsing dishes when putting them in the sink (now, I just need to train my boyfriend to do the same!). But there wasn't residue and a non-plesant smell like there was with the Seventh Gen. Two thumbs up!

I also read an article in a magazine about the Ecover Aloe Vera dishwashing soap for handwashing - apparently they soften hands the best! I use gloves anyway cause I'm a touching-old-food-phobe. And it keeps my hands nice and clean. I hate wrinkly hands from water. Luckily I already had a bottle of this though! Lemon-scented too - I love the smell!

Harbor Biking

Around Valentine's day this past year my boyfriend and I wanted to go out, and I came up with the idea of biking around the San Diego harbor. It would be a great way to get some exercise, take in the city, and have little to no impact on the environment!

We rented bikes from bike-tours.com. You can rent a bike for about $30 a day - the only drawback was that the bikes had to be back by 4:30pm - they were actually nice enough to extend it 5pm for us instead. :D

We originally wanted to do the harbor bike route down to Coronado and take the ferry back, but that was a 25 mile ride, and we weren't going to bring the bikes back in time. So the bike shop suggested we bike down to the Cabrillo Monument on Point Loma, which is only 11 miles.

We started biking, and it was a beautiful ride, down Harbor Drive. Watching the life, the harbor and the skyline. It was refreshing - I haven't biked in years, and I loved feeling the wind in my hair!

Unfortunately, we didn't make it down to the monument, instead, we stopped at Shelter Island, had a mini picnic there, watched the boats and biked back. :)

This was definitely a fun way to spend the day - we actually want to buy bikes now! Biking for leisure is totally fun, you get exercise, and you get a different view of the city! I'm so used to driving all around town - especially downtown, that it feels and looks completely different on a bike. It's an awesome feeling and I recommend it to anyone!

Style Me Pretty - Green Weddings

This is something I truly want to do when my own wedding comes around - having a green wedding! With the recent development of people being more eco-conscious, green wedding ideas are popping everywhere! One awesome post in particular is from Abby Jean of Style Me Pretty. All the ideas are awesome! One thing I really want to do when my own wedding rolls around is making my own dress. I might not be the one to sew it together necessarily, but I would love to! My mom is more skilled at that than I am. One dress I love is this Alvina Valenta design.

One of my favorite parts of her post is the Olivia Luca dresses! The website even allows you to create your own dress. Awesome!

I have so many more green wedding ideas up my sleeve, but I'll post more another time. Especially resources here in San Diego!

Trader Joe's Organic Wine & more

I love Trader Joe's. I would go there everyday if I lived closer to one. But I only get to visit one every other week or so because I always end up going to a closer natural foods store. But I try and wait till I hit up TJ's!

A friend of mine told me that their Organic Chardonnay has been recommended to her, and that I should try it first. So we did!

I think this is a recent development with them offering organic wines (correct me if I'm wrong), and I picked up a bottle of the chardonnay yesterday. They also offer Shirah, which we didn't take. The bottle was only $4.99.

Taste - it was decent! Nothing spectacular, but not horrible either. It tastes similar to the popular Charles Shaw (Two Buck Chuck) wines they are so popular for. For an organic wine, the price can't be beat! :)

Also, speaking of organic treats, I went to Costco the other day to pick up some things, one of which were treats for the pets. I usually get the large bags of dried chicken strips - all natural 100% chicken, which both Mooch and Gromit LOOOOVE. They also sell such things in pet stores, but it's usually $20 for a 1lb tub, while at Costco, it's $12 for a 2lb bag.

Anyway, I was disappointed that they didn't have the chicken strips there, but instead, found this:

Organic chicken treats, with no wheat or fillers! I immediately picked up a box, which is a fairly large box, plus it was only about $12.

Gromit AND Mooch loves the treats! I def. recommend heading out to TJ's and Costco for some awesome finds!

Buy British

I've been fairly busy this weekend - helping with wedding planning, getting my car checked out and fixed, etc! Today, when my boyfriend and I were waiting for our cars to be done, walked around the little shopping center and found a store called "British Foods" And I realized that it was an English import food store! Of course, I had to go in!! And I found lots of fun things. A lot wasn't organic and etc, but I have a blast finding new things!

Rishi Tea, which I've heard good things about. Fairly high quality tea too, it seems - it cost about $20 for one of the cans of tea. I put it down immediately because I can't afford such extravagant teas!!

I loved the way these sacks looked with their little owl eyes! The cashier lady (who had the cutest accent) told us it was the "most refreshing drink." We put it in the fridge and took a few sips once it was chilled - and interestingly enough, it tastes just like the Dole Lime fruit bars that unfortunately got discontinued! :( - only in all liquid form!

Here are a few more interesting things in the store I took photos of:

I have more I'm going to post hopefully tomorrow! :D

Ki's Restaurant

I love the Food Network, and I love Rachel Ray's show "$40 a Day" and "Tasty Travels." Unfortunately, I hate Rachel Ray. BUT! I watch the shows anyway, because I love to hear about how restaurants do their thing, and I love it when they show San Diego because it highlights places I can visit!

On one episode, they quickly spotlighted a place in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA which isn't far from me, called Ki's Restaurant. On their website, they state:

"...offering an array of food and drinks made from high-quality organic (when possible ) fruits, vegetables, grains, eggs, dairy, fresh fish, poultry products and beef."

Of course we had to visit! So we brought our friends along for dinner. I didn't get a decent shot of the outside since it was so dark so the first image isn't mine.

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Reijh5ucwTI/AAAAAAAAAIc/4_e9tnDvfpA/s400/DSCF1447.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037455986040553778" />

While we were waiting for them I had fun taking some shots. I didn't bring my SLR with me because I didn't want to lug it around, so I brought my little Fuji. :D

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReimPZucwUI/AAAAAAAAAIk/uOYXoE-BJ-A/s400/DSCF1435.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037458966747857218" />

The nice view of the lit ocean/beach - I couldn't get a good shot of this

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReimiJucwVI/AAAAAAAAAIs/N1x66UpuB2g/s400/DSCF1444.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037459288870404434" />

The guys ordered Samuel Smith's organically brewed beer. They said it was decent. They originally wanted Stone Brewery beers (which is local!) but their tap was broken. :(

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReinQ5ucwWI/AAAAAAAAAI0/j7rLSVknYYs/s400/DSCF1452.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037460092029288802" />

Instead of bread, they brought out mini muffins, which were sooooooo good! I don't know what kind of muffins they were - they had walnuts and were just so yummy. I could've sat there and just ate the muffins.

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rein8ZucwXI/AAAAAAAAAI8/xCJCEKppBHg/s400/DSCF1456.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037460839353598322" />

I ordered one the specials, which was the seared ahi tuna and wasabi sauce with scallops, potatoes and veggies. The ahi was decent - drier than I like, but the potatoes and the scallops were yum!

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReioZZucwYI/AAAAAAAAAJE/QV4znfTfqDI/s400/DSCF1457.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037461337569804674" />

My boyfriend ordered the top sirloin steak, which seemed only pretty good since he didn't sing a lot of praise for it.

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReiotJucwZI/AAAAAAAAAJM/QHl6uzzVnjg/s400/DSCF1458.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037461676872221074" />

And our friend ordered the spicy mahi mahi, which is what I almost got. It actually looked better than what I got. I didn't get to try it though, so I can't say.

Overall, I really liked the ambiance, parts of the food were DELICIOUS and parts were okay - overall I'd come again. Maybe next time it'll be for breakfast or lunch so it'll be cheaper!

DIY Grocery Bags

Making your own grocery bags (or anything bags, really!) is a great way to make it whatever size you want, and whatever fabric you want (recycle!)! I made this bag a loooong time ago, using a thrift store find table linen (or was it a bed sheet?? I can't remember!) and the Jordy Bag pattern.

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RedYRU7AaFI/AAAAAAAAAIE/JwS0sF_Pv6M/s400/IMG_0007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037091762934409298" />

I obviously made the size of the bag much bigger than a handbag, and I attached the straps differently. This HUGE bag only cost me about $3 for the fabric and it's lasted for years already!

Grocery Finds

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReZxSU7AaAI/AAAAAAAAAHI/u_AEj8C1A08/s400/IMG_0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036837792928262146" />

I went to the store the other day after dance class as usual and found the coolest thing (to me anyway!) - ORGANIC MILK in REAL glass bottles from Straus Creamery!

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReZxZk7AaBI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/J-zL2ik3Apo/s400/IMG_0002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036837917482313746" />

The part that caught my eye when shopping was on the milk case there was a sticker saying "Return bottles for a refund!" Apparently, you can return these glass bottles of milk at the store you bought it, or any store that carries this milk and get some money back. Now I don't know how much money, but that's an awesome way to not waste!

Another cool thing about the milk is that they do it old fashioned way, so the cream of the milk actually floats on top. My boyfriend was horrified by this, as he hates pulp in his orange juice, so the idea of cream in his milk makes him refuse to even try it! I really enjoy the milk though - it's nice and I think the flavor is ten times better than normal milk. I wouldn't mind drinking glasses of this, but I hate drinking normal milk.

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReZxeE7AaCI/AAAAAAAAAHY/NU2WJ4afzRg/s400/IMG_0003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036837994791725090" />

The creamery is located in Northern California too, so it's local (somewhat) ;D

Another thing I discovered are these Green Tea Mints:

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReZxqU7AaDI/AAAAAAAAAHg/gnAdajwzyCY/s400/IMG_0005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036838205245122610" />

I got the "lively lemongrass" flavor, and it's nice - the mints are all-natural and apparently 3 mints equals one cup of green tea, so if you don't feel like drinking any but want your green tea fix, try this! Caffeine free too.

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReZxv07AaEI/AAAAAAAAAHo/wpvp7uSmab8/s400/IMG_0006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036838299734403138" />

Green Pets

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RePOkk7AZ6I/AAAAAAAAAF8/z9vpeZxcffo/s400/IMG_0002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036095936112125858" />
<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RePOhE7AZ5I/AAAAAAAAAF0/NogRin5tABE/s400/IMG_0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036095875982583698" />

Meet Gromit (our pup) and Mooch (our kitty). They're our babies, our children. Gromit really needs a haircut, as you can see. :)

If you're like us, and live in a condo/apartment (upstairs too!) where you don't really have your own yard and need to walk your dog often, then you are probably familiar with picking up after your dog. I used to use plastic grocery bags before I started being more green-conscious, but then, I discovered these at the store:

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RePPVk7AZ7I/AAAAAAAAAGE/PiowxNxrBto/s400/IMG_0004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036096777925715890" />

BioBags for Dog Waste!
They're made of corn, and biodegradable, just like the trash bags. They're much more simple to use too, I think. You pick up the waste, turn it inside out, and they provide a little hole that you slip through so you don't need to do any tying. Simple! They're about $5 for a box of 50 at health food stores.

Also, for Mooch, we've started using this:

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RePRBU7AZ8I/AAAAAAAAAGM/k5R0_Tazdi4/s400/IMG_0005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036098629056620482" />
World's Best Cat Litter
It's the only cat litter made from whole kernel corn. It was funny when I first started using it, Mooch and Gromit sat there sniffing the bag for a long time probably cause they thought it was food.
<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RePRKU7AZ9I/AAAAAAAAAGU/D6_OTfcehcc/s400/IMG_0006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036098783675443154" />
I'm so glad we switched because I was previously using a clay-based litter, and the smell was overly fragrant, and the dust would cause me to sneeze. Every time I changed the litter box, I had to leave the room for a while. I'm still in the process of gradually getting him over to the new litter. When changing your cat's litter brand, mix it in with their old litter and make it a gradual process.
<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RePRSk7AZ-I/AAAAAAAAAGc/tgkguydC3HQ/s400/IMG_0007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036098925409363938" />
It's kitty approved!

Also, for Gromit, we use Bio-Groom Fluffy Puppy shampoo when giving him a bath. It's all natural with human-grade products.

For food, we feed them Chicken Soup for the Dog/Cat Lover's Soul, which is all natural. We also occasionally feed Mooch Innova Evo, but it's quite pricey, and Chicken Soup is much more reasonable. (It's funny when I tell the vet what I'm feeding them too.. they usually have never heard of the brand which is funny.) When buying foods for pets, pay attention to the ingredient list! PURE meats should be first - like chicken, turkey, or beef... NOT chicken-meal or chicken-by-products. The rest of the ingredient list should be mostly ingredients you recognize. Also, try and stay away from fillers - like corn, soy, wheat. Many pets are allergic to this, and it's a filler - not nutrient rich like actual meats. Try and stay away from products using rice as a first ingredient as well. Many cheaper grocery store brands use fillers as the first ingredient - that's why they're so cheap. Plus, the less fillers, the less waste your pets will have! This is VERY true as I noticed when changing Mooch's food around.

I think when changing your eating habits and changing to a greener lifestyle, you should do the same for your pets. Treat them with the same respect as any human. Everyone will be happier and healthier in the long run! :D

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RePXYk7AZ_I/AAAAAAAAAG8/72DCiL_ZKlc/s400/IMG_0003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036105625558345714" />

Authentic French Meringue Cookies

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReJyUU7AZ4I/AAAAAAAAAFo/B5NC0yBvGR0/s400/07.02.25+merigues.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035713026892785538" />

For Valentine's day, I made my boyfriend mint meringue cookies. They're wonderful, simple and tasty - the recipe itself does take a lot of energy, but it's a wonderful treat in the end. Taken from All Recipes.

INGREDIENTS

4 egg whites
2 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Butter and flour a baking sheet.
2. In a glass or metal bowl, whip egg whites until foamy using an electric mixer. Sprinkle in sugar a little at a time, while continuing to whip at medium speed. When the mixture becomes stiff and shiny like satin, stop mixing, and transfer the mixture to a large pastry bag. Pipe the meringue out onto the prepared baking sheet using a large round tip or star tip.
3. Place the meringues in the oven and place a wooden spoon handle in the door to keep it from closing all the way. Bake for 3 hours, or until the meringues are dry, and can easily be removed from the pan. Allow cookies to cool completely before storing in an airtight container at room temperature.

My own notes:
* Instead of flour and butter on the baking sheet, I used unbleached parchment paper.
* I used organic sugar and free-range eggs
* I used 1tsp of mint extract to add some flavor and 1/4 cup more sugar to make up for the added liquid.
* You can also set the oven to 185 instead of using the spoon/door method.

Mmmm! Enjoy!

Wedding Reads

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReIzlE7AZ2I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/oZX-vLcCCmk/s400/IMG_0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035644045423044450" />

Yesterday I headed up to LA to visit my best friend because she's getting married and I'm the maid of honor so I was helping her plan. We had a fun day - went to look at locations, dresses, and stationary! We also headed to the bookstore, where I picked up two books:

Eco-Chic Weddings
All about green weddings - of course I had to! I got to skim through it more last night and really liked her ideas and she had a ton of resources and websites. The author, Emily Anderson, also has a blog.

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/ReIzpk7AZ3I/AAAAAAAAAFY/e6WJEJx-vM4/s400/IMG_0002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035644122732455794" />
The Bridesmaid Guide
This is my first time being maid of honor, so I wanted to know all the little details about what responsibilities I need to have! So far, I really enjoy this book - it has great ideas, and helps me brainstorm for the bridal shower, which I'm going to have lots of fun planning! :D Time to put some Danny Seo's ideas into action as well as my own! Expect a green party! :D

Which reminds me, I need to hit up the library soon.. too bad I have a huge fine for overdue books right now :(

Annie Chun's Biodegradeable Bowls

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd-76BNdrUI/AAAAAAAAAEI/rtH484x57GE/s400/IMG_0006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034949513855216962" />

I never like cooking for myself, so I always end up retreating to quick meals - like canned soups and noodle bowls. One of my faves is Annie Chun's noodle bowls.

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd-8ZRNdrVI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/gBmNzU-i1tM/s400/IMG_0005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034950050726128978" />

The great thing about them? The food is all natural (not organic), AND, the bowls are biodegradable! They are made from corn, and what I like to do with the bowls after the meal is use them for food compost by the sink. I just thrown the whole bowl into the compost pile when it's full. Yay!

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd-8gRNdrWI/AAAAAAAAAEY/r1yuziVuSNw/s400/IMG_0007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034950170985213282" />

You can read more about the bowls on her website (some of her products are also gluten free as well!), and make a small donation for children in need here.

Downfall, yes, they're not cheap (I think they're normally $3.50ish at Ralph's - I've gotten them at Trader Joe's though, and I'm pretty sure they're cheaper there)

Now I just need to get worms for my compost pile...

Mutts Shtuff

Mutts is my favorite comic ever - I love the honest, innocent insights from Mooch and Earl, the main characters (a kitty and a dog! I LOVE some of the stuff they carry in their online store too - here are two things I'm really wanting right now!

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd-ZJhNdrSI/AAAAAAAAADw/EIsvcakKQqw/s400/165.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034911297236217122" />
Greeting Cards that you can plant!
I LOVE this idea - you send someone a greeting card and bouquet in one! Plus, I've been thinking about doing bridal shows as well, and I will need postcards and handouts! Originally, I thought about doing all that myself too, but 1) it's a lot of work, 2) it's a lot of time - two things I can't spare right now. Plus, with my lifestyle change, it was going to be hard finding a suitable printer.

I heard about green printing companies using soy-based inks and the like, so when I found Greener Printer, I was thrilled. But I got a good idea of their card stock and printing, so I'm very excited.

If you ever need anything printed in fairly large quantities, you should definitely check them out! They have a real-time estimator on their website too, which is awesome because you will be able to see how much something will REALLY cost you.

Five Simple Ways

Going green feels like such a huge daunting task when you first begin. I remember thinking "Where in the world do I start?! I'm just one person, I'm not going to make that big of a difference!" Easy way out, right? I actually felt very depressed about the whole thing. The world was doomed, in my eyes.

It wasn't until I watched "An Inconvenient Truth" that I felt my attitude about the world's state change. It went from "I can't make that much of a difference" to "Even if it starts at just me, it's starting somewhere." Others see by your example and change their own behaviors. Even if they don't, know that you are living in a way that is gentle on the earth. And don't you want to care for things you find valuable?

Lifestyle changes are hard though, especially if you're not in the right mindset. So don't do it because "everyone tells you to" or you feel obligated to. Do it because you want to make a difference, and you want to care for the earth. Do it because you want to. Because without that mindset, you're not going to do anything wholeheartedly.

I read in Organic Housekeeping that it takes 21 days for someone to form a new habit or break a habit. So if you're willing, try to change little things for 21 days in a row. Here are some great and easy ways to start if you don't know where to start!

1.
<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4pkRNdrHI/AAAAAAAAABs/70wa5neN27I/s400/01+recycle.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034507136518696050" />
Recycling is one of the easier ways to lessen your impact. Instead of contributing to landfills, you're allowing something to become something new and reused. Most major cities have a lot of recycling programs out there, Earth 911 is a great way to start finding recycling locations near your area.

Luckily for us, we have recycling bins near our trash bins in the complex (although it irritates me to no end when I see recyclable things in the trash!!). If you don't have a recycling program in your area, try and find out how you can implement one in your neighborhood - people will recycle more because it'll be more convenient for them.

I know in California, they raised the return money for recycling this past year, for you get 10 cents for large containers and 5 cents for small ones. You can find more information at bottlesandcans.com. We currently keep all bottles and cans and plastics in plastic bins and everything else (paper, cardboard) goes into the neighborhood recycling bins. We also recycle the plastic grocery bags we get, I know the Ralph's supermarket in our neighborhood takes used plastic bags for recycling - check your neighborhood store if they do too.

2.
<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4pyBNdrII/AAAAAAAAAB0/7n9vtK72tdY/s400/02+corn+bags+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034507372741897346" />
(Our dog, Gromit, not included)
This one is a little more costly, since I know a lot of people re-use plastic bags as trash bags (*ahem* like my parents.. and most Asian families). But recycle those bags, and use biodegradable bags instead! I get a satisfying feeling when I know that I'm using something that wasn't from non-renewable sources, and that they biodegrade.
<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4qBhNdrJI/AAAAAAAAAB8/ap5DhvEAtXw/s400/02+corn+bags+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034507639029869714" />
They cost about $5 a box, and you can find them at most Whole Foods or natural food store. I have yet to see them at Trader Joe's though! The only problem is that you can't really throw out food in the bags because well... they biodegrade. Well you probably could if you took out the trash more regularly than we do... :P

3.
<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4qJxNdrKI/AAAAAAAAACE/PBNjNwllXCY/s400/03+organic+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034507780763790498" />
Yes, buying organic does cost more. But I think of it this way - I'd rather be spending more out of my own pocket, than harming the earth and my health. Same goes for buying things like Bio Bags. Also, supply and demand. The more demand in organic foods, the lower the prices will get. Spend your money where your mouth is.

Two things to look out for when buying organic:

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4qQxNdrLI/AAAAAAAAACM/cK2DH7E0pcU/s400/03+organic+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034507901022874802" />
Look for the USDA label. This means that the product is certified organic, because really, anyone could label their stuff "organic." This was only recently implemented in 2002.

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4qYhNdrMI/AAAAAAAAACU/D_eJz7iN06Q/s400/03+organic+3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034508034166860994" />
When buying produce, look at the number stickers. If there's a "9" in front of a 4-digit number, then it was grown organically. If there's a "8" in front of it, it means that it was genetically modified (STAY AWAY!) If there are only 4 digits, then it was grown conventionally.

Also, pay attention to where it was grown! Try buying local - farmers markets are great, and read the signs and labels to see where it came from. The closer they are, they less energy it took to bring it to you. And that's better for the planet, yes?

4.
<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4qhxNdrNI/AAAAAAAAACc/BE8LsnpdkRo/s400/04+recycled.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034508193080650962" />
Again, buying recycled does cost more, but you're reusing, yes? Make sure you check the label and read the percentage of POST-COMSUMER waste that was used. Meaning, people already used it, rather than pre-consumer, which means that it could be from things like wood shavings on a mill floor or something. The higher the post-consumer, the better.

5.
<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/Rd4qqBNdrOI/AAAAAAAAACk/HNsAxNoFjn4/s400/05+cloth.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034508334814571746" />
Using cloth bags is one thing that I have a hard time remembering to do because when I want to go to the store, it's on a whim, and I don't have my bags with me. So sometimes I have to grudgingly get a bag, or just carry without bags. But when you can, use reusable bags! Some stores give discounts, or put you in a raffle when you use your own bag. Apparently, IKEA is starting to charge for plastic bags. I know many places in the UK and overseas do this, and I'm so glad SOMEONE is starting this in the US.

You can get bags at many stores - Trader Joe's has the canvas ones for $3, and there are many great ones you can buy at reusablebags.com.

...

Looking back, that's all a lot of information, and it may be a lot to take in - but you can always start small! Recycle for a bit first, then move onto something else. But all these things are good to keep in your mind when shopping at the grocery store. What helped me in the beginning because I felt very overwhelmed with ideas, is to jot things down. Make a list of all the things you want to change, and cross them off when you accomplish them - it was easy for me after that, cause I constantly thought about it. Your mileage may vary :)

Green Publications

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzBPBNdq_I/AAAAAAAAAAM/3jSmhWtCbuI/s400/07.02.21+books.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034110947260476402" />

I love books and I LOVE magazines even more. I'm a junkie before I go to bed - you should see the pile on my side of the bed! I like to read and look at magazines and think up ideas, styles, etc - before sleeping. It's not the most green thing to do, but I recycle and have been trying to give away the magazines that I no longer read to others who might enjoy them. I thought I'd share with you some of the books and magazines I have and thoughts.

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzIsxNdrAI/AAAAAAAAAAY/1j4RvNKgVFQ/s400/07.02.21+organichousekeeping.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034119154942979074" />
ORGANIC HOUSEKEEPING
One of my first books, this is pretty much a non-toxic cleaning BIBLE. It has so much interesting information about everyday household things that you don't even realize. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to put their foot into a greener lifestyle. This definitely outlines so much, plus it's great to keep on the bookshelf for referencing!

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzI2hNdrBI/AAAAAAAAAAg/VtJOFSKVrDU/s400/07.02.21+healthyhome.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034119322446703634" />
THE HEALTHY HOME WORKBOOK
I actually bought this a while back at Costco and didn't get around to reading it till recently. It's got lots of great simple tricks and changes to make your home and life greener. It breaks it down fairly easily from room to room and in incriments on how seriously you want to commit to the changes.

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzJMBNdrCI/AAAAAAAAAAo/GF6yMQb_-gE/s400/07.02.21+newmans.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034119691813891106" />
NEWMAN'S OWN ORGANICS GUIDE TO A GOOD LIFE
I didn't read this book all the way through like I did the last two - I kind of jumped around a bit, so it didn't feel "full" like the other two did to me. But it really has some great information, some even outside of the home, like investing and energy and putting your money where your mouth is, basically.

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzJahNdrDI/AAAAAAAAAAw/Y5an9OAI8Ek/s400/07.02.21+postpet.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034119940921994290" />
THE POST PETROLEUM SURVIVAL GUIDE AND COOKBOOK
This is a really dark sounding book - because it does address a scary fact - petroleum - something most of the world relies on, is quickly diminishing. I picked this book up primarily because I want to live in a way where I don't need to rely on a non-renewable resource, and it's got some interesting recipes, and is a how-to-survival guide. I haven't been able to really read this because a lot of it addresses home things that I can't change, living in a condo. Maybe once I live in my own home, eh?

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzJjRNdrEI/AAAAAAAAAA4/YFF0KutKm5Q/s400/07.02.21+simplyg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034120091245849666" />
SIMPLY GREEN PARTIES
I actually picked this up at the Tower Books in Sacramento while it was closing down (RIP Tower Records!!) - it was my last visit to a store that my boyfriend and I spent a lot of time in when we still lived at home. I picked this up mainly because I loved the ideas I saw in the book - and I even tried the butternut squash recipe in the book (although, I didn't quite blend it well enough and didn't turn out the way I wanted it to). The author, Danny Seo, also has a blog. :)

...

Now, magazines! If you ask my boyfriend, I have way too many magazines for my own good. But I love them, their ever changing information, pretty pictures and current articles.

<img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzJtBNdrFI/AAAAAAAAABA/rZ8O0i2uveQ/s400/07.02.21+orstnahe.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034120258749574226" />
ORGANIC STYLE, NATURAL HEALTH & NATURAL HOME
Organic Style was one of my FAVORITE magazines, until it died. I used to go to the library and check out a ton of them. Unfortunately, they don't carry it at my local library anymore, but I love looking at the back issues that I have. One of my favorite ones was from March 05 (I think), where they highlighted Alicia Silverstone (I love her!) and talked about green weddings.

Natural Health is another cool magazine - not quite as awesome as Organic Style though.

Natural Home I only have one issue of, so I haven't really been able to judge the magazine as a whole. So far, I enjoy the issues because it focuses more on the home, while Natural Health is obviously about health and Organic Style was about everything inbetween.

...

There are also magazines that aren't originally green, but because of the recent trend, have come out with green issues this month. These are also, coincidentally, two of my most favorite magazines in the world.

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jLb1yXZ9WRE/RdzJ2hNdrGI/AAAAAAAAABI/kuMU2hV7Doo/s400/07.02.21+rmdom.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034120421958331490" />
DOMINO & READYMADE
I love Domino - the colors, the style, the homes! It's an inspiring magazine, and I was thrilled when I saw this issue at my local bookstore. It has some great ideas - too bad a lot of them are quite pricey, but it also has great tips, and who said you have to get exactly what they get? Go to a thrift store!

Readymade - one of the magazines I actually subscribe to (I'm this [] close to subscribing to Domino), and I was ecstatic when I saw what this issue was about this month. Readymade was already great in green ways - a majority of their projects are about reusing things and remaking them into other things. This issue had a lot of cool ideas, but I honestly didn't feel like I could put many of them into fair use. And didn't feel that radically different than their other issues. A good effort though!

The Java Log

We finally got around to trying out some Java Logs today and disappointingly, no, they don't make your house smell like a coffee shop. I decided to create this blog to help others - posting about products, reviews, adventures and just things that my boyfriend and I have been doing to have a greener lifestyle. Obviously this is still in the beginning stages, but I'm hoping to get some great stuff up and out there - not just living day to day, but for other situations, like weddings (obviously, since they are such a huge part of my life!) among other things.

I have so much that I want to begin with, but it's hard to start just anywhere, when you want to make posts that have meaning in each one. I guess I can start a little about what I do.

I'm a wedding photographer living in San Diego - and lately I've been trying to think up ways to give back in green ways. I've found this website 1% for the Planet, which is basically an organization that businesses join, pledging to give at least 1% of their income/sales to environmental causes. I think this is awesome, and something I really want to get into. I guess my own apprehension is that I really don't know where to start! Joining something like this feels like such a big thing to me, and kind of intimidating, I guess. It really shouldn't be, since it's meant for good, yes? I already emailed them, and they sent back information, which I haven't really been able to sit down and read just yet. I'm hoping soon that I can join them though.

I think another reason why I'm feeling so apprehensive about the whole thing is that I don't feel good about my own money - especially this year - business is slow. I'm horrible at bookkeeping, and money watching. I'm trying my very best right now though.

We'll see, won't we? :)
